Seeing the various posts about knee, hip and other joint replacements got me wondering whether OA is an inevitable partner to our RA, whether RA increases the relative chances of OA or whether OA is an independent process that is age related?

Thoughts?

i would say no Osteo is not a done deal with having RA,

i've had Osteo in both knee's ( as you have probably read on many posts ) for a good 8-9 years now .. well before my RA days which will be 4 years next May.

i was very overweight back then, and i feel that is a lot to blame for the Osteo, in 2007 i went on a fantastic slimming plan and lost a vast amount of weight and thankfully have kept the weight. i truly believe Osteo is just wear and tear, weight related in some case's, age etc. etc.

Hi Paul,

I would agree with Suzanne. OA and RA are not synonymous with one another. OA being very much age related/ injury related.
However, once you develop RA your OA can become more troublesome, to the point of not knowing which
is the presenting problem.

The mechanism's associated with one are very different to the other.
OA can be, and is, a very debilitating disease, sadly not helped by steroids which can be a god send to us when we have a 'flare' .

All of us whoever we are and whatever illnesses we have, will develop some OA during the course of our lifetime, it may not
be troublesome, but we will develop wear and tear.Sad

Hi

I had a knee condition in my teens which I was told could develop into OA later which indeed it has. I guess I have had some degree of OA since my early thirties so not an age related thing in my case, and RA since maybe forty

However I was once told that the development of OA can be hastened by the presence of RA so if you're gonna get it it might just start earlier than you'd expect!Sad But who knows?
